Braunton Burrows

Location:
North Devon.
Description:
Braunton Burrows is a large sandy beach with an extensive dune system on the north bank of the Torridge and Taw estuary in North Devon. At low tide there is plenty of sand which stretches from Broad Sands west along the edge of the River Taw to Crow Point with its lighthouse. The beach then stretches three miles north to Saunton Sands. The sand by the River Taw can be a bit muddy in places.
Safety:
No beach safety information available. No lifeguard service. The dunes are used for military training. Do not pick up military debris. See Beach Safety Guide.
Access:
At the Broad Sands car park there are steps to the beach. There is also a slipway to the beach from the road.
Dogs:
Dogs allowed all year. In the dunes dog owners are requested to keep their dogs under close control at all times and kept on a lead around livestock.
Directions:
Braunton Burrows is about 8 miles from Barnstaple. There are various routes into North Devon to Barnstaple such as the A39 from Cornwall or the A377 from Exeter. At Barnstaple take the A361 on the road bridge over the River Taw. Then at the Braunton Road Junction turn left continuing on the A361 (signposted for Braunton and Ilfracombe). Follow the A361 to Braunton and in Braunton at the roundabout opposite the petrol station, turn left sign posted to Crow Point. Continue on this road and go straight across at the next roundabout. Continue on this road for several miles and then turn left onto the toll road for the Broad Sands car park. Keep on this road to the toll house, pay the toll and then continue to the car park. Alternatively, go past the entrance to the toll road, continue on this lane for several miles, then turn left onto Sandy Lane and continue here to the Sandy Lane car park. Park here and walk the track (known as American Road) to the beach, this is about 1-2 miles. From the Sandy Lane car park you can also walk across the dunes to the west part of the beach.
